Her life, as it was known to those around her, appeared to have simply ceased in late January or early February of that year, the last time investigators believe she was alive.

on September 9, 2009, a fisherman made a grim discovery along the western shoreline of the Allegany Reservoir in the town of South Valley. Skeletal remains were found, but their identity was a mystery. It would take nearly two more years of intensive investigation and the use of STR DNA profiling to finally give the remains a name: Traci Lynn Douglass.
The identification of Douglass's remains officially turned a long-unasked question into a cold case homicide investigation. The Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office Cold Case Unit took charge of the case, piecing together the timeline of her disappearance and the discovery of her body. Despite their ongoing efforts and the public's awareness of the case, there have been no arrests made in connection with her death.
