In the quiet, gated community of Pelham Bay in the Bronx, a tragedy unfolded that cut short the life of 29-year-old Florida Lumi. On May 17, 2016, police responded to a call of an assault in progress at an apartment on Outlook Avenue. Inside, they made a grim discovery: the bodies of Lumi and her 39-year-old partner, Fred Rudaj. Both had suffered fatal gunshot wounds to the head and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Lumi, who was reportedly pregnant at the time of her death, had been in
a relationship with Rudaj for about nine months. Neighbors described them as a nice, loving couple, and there were no prior reports of domestic incidents involving the two. However, one neighbor recalled hearing an argument followed by a gunshot around 1 a.m. on the day their bodies were found, though it was not reported to the police at the time.
Investigators found a 9-mm handgun at the scene, which was later discovered to have been stolen. The evidence led the New York Police Department to classify the case as a murder-suicide, with the belief that Rudaj shot and killed Lumi before turning the gun on himself. While the investigation officially remained open, the primary suspect in Lumi's murder was deceased, and therefore no arrests were made.
