Gerard Woodley, 46, a Black man, was killed late on June 23, 2016, in Harlem, just steps from where he lived near West 139th Street and Lenox Avenue. Close to 11 p.m., the night broke open in the middle of a disturbance outside his building, and in the sudden chaos he was shot—struck hard enough that the block’s ordinary summer sounds gave way to sirens and shouting.
