In the early morning hours of August 3, 2016, a Black / African American man named Duval Connell, 40, was fatally shot in the Bronx, New York. The incident occurred less than a mile from his home on East Tremont Avenue. Surveillance footage captured Connell standing in front of a building on Manning Street at approximately 2:15 a.m.
Shortly after moving out of the camera's view, two individuals confronted him in what police believe was a robbery attempt.
Connell had just left a nearby deli after purchasing groceries. During the robbery, he was shot in the shoulder. The assailants then removed his pants and took his wallet before fleeing the scene, discarding the pants in some nearby bushes. A makeshift memorial was later placed outside of his home.
The investigation into the homicide led to the arrest of one suspect. Dwayne Francis, 20, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder, robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon. Police stated their belief that two suspects were involved in the fatal robbery of Connell.
