In the early morning hours of January 17, 2021, a burst of violence on a Bronx street cut short the life of 27-year-old Jamal W. Hunter. The fatal encounter unfolded at approximately 1:07 a.m. in front of 1779 Fulton Avenue in the Claremont section of the Bronx. Responding to a 911 call about a person shot, police officers from the 42nd Precinct arrived to a grim scene.
They discovered Hunter unconscious and unresponsive, with a single gunshot wound to his neck.
Paramedics rushed Hunter to St. Barnabas Hospital, but his injury was too severe. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, leaving his family and friends to grapple with the sudden and violent loss. The location of the shooting was described as being near the Cross Bronx Expressway, across the street from Crotona Park. While the motive for the shooting was not immediately made public, some reports indicated that Hunter had a criminal record and was known to be associated with the Bloods gang as a drug dealer.
The investigation into Hunter's death moved swiftly. Later that same day, at around 9:30 p.m., police arrested a suspect in connection with the killing. The man taken into custody was identified as 27-year-old Curtus Quincy of East 137th Street. Quincy was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. Law enforcement sources indicated that Quincy was apprehended in the vicinity of the crime scene. The relationship, if any, between Hunter and Quincy was not disclosed by authorities as the investigation continued.
