In the Bronx, a 17-year-old male of Guatemalan Garifuna heritage, Kymani Woods, lost his life on the evening of April 10, 2023. The fatal encounter unfolded around 10 p.m. at the Burke Avenue subway station, which serves the 2 and 5 lines on White Plains Road in the Allerton section of the borough. Woods was on the elevated subway platform when he was approached by another teenager and three other individuals.
A struggle ensued, during which Woods was tragically shot multiple times.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured the harrowing moments as Woods was thrown down a flight of stairs and fired upon. Even after he lay on the ground, one of the assailants was seen shooting him again at close range. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Woods with gunshot wounds to his head, arm, and shoulder. He was rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Another 17-year-old was also found at the scene with a gunshot wound to his hip and was listed in stable condition.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of 17-year-old Owen Darien, who was also found at the station with a gunshot wound to his thigh. Darien was subsequently indicted on charges of second-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter, and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned on April 17, 2023, and remanded. The case against him is being prosecuted by the Bronx District Attorney's Office. Authorities have stated that three other individuals involved in the incident remain unapprehended as the investigation continues.
