On March 2, 2016, Bernette Shelton “Butch” Darby, a 34-year-old African American man, was fatally shot in New Orleans, Louisiana. A lifelong resident of the city, Bernette Darby was employed at Southern Scrap Metals and Felix's Oyster Bar. He was the beloved son of Shelita Darby and the late Lawrence Smith, and the father of Kayvon Le Blanc. His extended family included several siblings and numerous relatives who mourned his untimely death.
