In the late summer of 2016, a violent encounter in a North Amityville, New York, home ended the life of 28-year-old Rashad Woolridge, a Black male. On the afternoon of August 16th, Suffolk County police responded to a call from a residence on Avon Drive and discovered Woolridge deceased from a gunshot wound. The initial investigation pointed to a dispute that had taken a fatal turn within the walls of the home he shared with his girlfriend and her son.
Detectives quickly identified the
housemate, 18-year-old Tephonte Smith, as the individual responsible for the shooting. Smith was promptly arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Woolridge's death. The incident reportedly began with a physical altercation between Woolridge and Smith's mother. After Smith intervened to break up the fight, Woolridge left the residence, only to return a short time later. He then proceeded to the basement, calling out for Smith. It was in the basement that a single, fatal shot was fired.
When authorities arrived, they found a shotgun at the scene and a loaded handgun near Woolridge's body. As the case moved forward, further details emerged that cast the event in a different light. At the time of the fatal encounter, there was an active order of protection against Woolridge, instructing him to stay away from Smith's mother. The defense for Tephonte Smith argued that his actions were not born of malice, but of self-preservation.
This claim was ultimately presented to a Suffolk County grand jury. After reviewing the evidence and the circumstances leading up to the shooting, the grand jury made a decisive ruling. They declined to indict Tephonte Smith, determining that the killing of Rashad Woolridge was an act of self-defense. Consequently, the second-degree murder charge against Smith was dropped, and he was set free.
