In the late summer of 2016, a tragedy unfolded within a home on Otsego Street in the village of Ilion, New York, leaving a family altered forever. On the afternoon of August 30th, police were called to the residence where they discovered the body of 42-year-old Stanley Johnson. An initial investigation by the Ilion Police Department determined that Johnson had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. At the time of his death, Johnson resided at a different address on Grove Street in Ilion.
The incident was not a solitary event, as several other family members were present in the home at the time of the fatal shooting. Among them was a 20-year-old woman, believed to be Johnson's daughter, who sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her leg. It is believed that the same bullet that ended Stanley Johnson's life passed through his body and struck her. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was subsequently released.
Four other family members, including three children, were also in the house when the tragic events transpired.
In the days that followed, the investigation continued, with the New York State Police assisting the Ilion Police Department. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed to officially confirm the cause of death. The findings of the investigation pointed to a domestic incident that culminated in a suicide, and as a result, there were no arrests or suspects sought in connection with Stanley Johnson's death. The event left the community to grapple with the sudden and violent loss, and a family to navigate the profound grief of their loved one's passing.
