Joseph Jimenez, a 19-year-old male, was walking home from his girlfriend's house around 11:30 p.m. when tragedy struck. Just a block from the safety of his family's apartment, near the intersection of Walton Avenue and Rockwood Street, a struggle ensued, followed by the sound of gunshots that echoed through the neighborhood.
Jimenez, a talented student and a
rising basketball star at Hostos Community College, was found unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his head. He was rushed to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced deceased. A 21-year-old man who was also at the scene was shot in the leg but survived. The community was left in shock and mourning, creating a memorial outside his home to remember a young man full of potential.
Investigators at the time suggested that Jimenez, who had no criminal record and was focused on his education and his passion for basketball, may not have been the intended target. The prevailing theory was that his death was a tragic case of mistaken identity. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police searched for the group of men who were seen fleeing the scene on foot. Despite their efforts and pleas to the public for information, no arrests were immediately made in connection with the murder, leaving a grieving family and community searching for answers and justice for a life taken too soon.
