In a tragic turn of events on a Tuesday evening in Syracuse, New York, 19-year-old Ismael Diaz-Marrero and his 17-year-old brother, Daniel Diaz-Marrero, both of Cuban descent, were fatally shot in what authorities have described as a robbery attempt that went horribly wrong. The brothers were reportedly lured to the city's west side by a 17-year-old acquaintance of the younger brother.
Ismael was a hardworking sophomore at Le Moyne College, holding down two jobs to finance his education, and was known for his perpetually upbeat demeanor and a welcoming smile. His younger brother, Daniel, was a senior at a local Syracuse high school.
The events leading to their untimely deaths began when Sheahonni Davis, the 17-year-old girl, allegedly contacted the brothers and arranged to meet with them. Upon their arrival, they were ambushed by two men, 19-year-old Toriano Newson and 23-year-old Curtis L. Paige III. The intention was to rob the brothers of marijuana. During the course of the attempted robbery, Newson reportedly opened fire, striking and killing both Ismael and Daniel. The brothers had immigrated to the United States from Cuba with their father and younger sister approximately five years prior to the incident, following the death of their mother.
In the wake of the double homicide, the Syracuse Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to the apprehension of the three individuals believed to be responsible. Sheahonni Davis, Toriano Newson, and Curtis L. Paige III were arrested and subsequently charged with murder and attempted robbery for their roles in the deaths of the Diaz-Marrero brothers. The community, including friends, teachers, and professors from Le Moyne College, gathered for a memorial service to remember the two young men, who were described as well-liked and hardworking individuals with bright futures ahead of them.
