In a tragic eruption of gang violence on a spring evening in Queens, New York, a young man's life was cut short. Joshua Flores, a 23-year-old male, was fatally shot on May 18, 2017, near a playground in a residential area. The events of that night stemmed from an internal dispute within the Latin Kings street gang.
Jonathan Garcia, a fellow gang member also known as 'Jayo,' had brought a firearm to a meeting with other members who were reportedly planning to revoke his membership.
An argument broke out, escalating to a point where one of Garcia's associates fired a warning shot into the air, causing the other gang members to scatter.
As the men fled, Garcia took the handgun from his associate and fired at the fleeing group. A bullet struck Joshua Flores in the back, traveling to his jaw. He was privately transported to a local hospital, but the wound proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to his injuries. The murder, rather than leading to Garcia's ousting from the gang, elevated his status within the Latin Kings.
In the years following the murder, Jonathan Garcia continued his involvement in criminal activities, including drug trafficking, as he rose through the ranks of the gang. However, law enforcement eventually caught up with him. Garcia was arrested and, in October 2021, charged with a slew of offenses, including the murder of Joshua Flores, racketeering, and narcotics conspiracy. After a four-day trial in June 2023, a jury found him guilty. In April 2024, Jonathan Garcia was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional seven years for the murder and his other crimes.
