On a tragic Friday evening in Bushwick, Brooklyn, 26-year-old Terrell Ortiz was shot and killed while sitting in his white Nissan Altima. The fatal incident occurred on June 2, 2017, near 1065 Broadway. Responding to a ShotSpotter activation just before 7 p.m., police discovered Ortiz with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. Emergency responders rushed him to Woodhull Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators believe the shooting was gang-related, stating that Terrell Ortiz
was a known member of the Bloods street gang. Surveillance footage from the scene captured a suspect, described as a heavy-set Hispanic male in his twenties, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and dark shoes. The footage showed the man approach Ortiz's vehicle and fire multiple shots before fleeing. Police said the suspect arrived in a black Nissan Maxima, which made a U-turn before parking. Two men reportedly exited the Maxima and walked toward Ortiz's car before one of them, in the red sweatshirt, opened fire.
As of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in the case, and the investigation was ongoing. The New York Police Department appealed to the public for any information regarding the suspect or the incident.
The tragedy for the Ortiz family was compounded a year and a half later when Terrell's brother, William Ortiz, was also shot and killed. William was reportedly murdered at his mother's apartment building while making arrangements for his brother Terrell's tombstone. There have been no subsequent reports of arrests or convictions in the murder of Terrell Ortiz.
