In the summer of 2017, a violent encounter in the Melrose section of the Bronx cut short the life of 44-year-old Victor Marquez. On the afternoon of Sunday, August 13th, Marquez approached a younger man, 20-year-old Deshawn Brown, in front of an apartment building at 3125 Park Avenue. The meeting was tragically brief and ended in gunfire. Brown allegedly shot Marquez in the head in broad daylight.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Marquez was rushed to Lincoln Hospital,
but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The motive for the deadly confrontation appeared to be a dispute over a woman, as reports indicated Marquez was the new boyfriend of Brown's ex-girlfriend. Following the shooting, Brown fled into the nearby Park Avenue building, but his escape was short-lived.
The New York Police Department quickly responded and apprehended Deshawn Brown. He was taken into custody and subsequently arrested. Brown, who was reportedly out on bail for a prior gun and drug arrest from January of the same year and had a history of 12 previous arrests, faced serious charges for the death of Victor Marquez. He was arraigned the following Monday in Bronx Criminal Court on charges of murder and manslaughter, among others. The court ordered him to be held without bail.
