In the summer of 2018, a promising life was tragically cut short in the Bronx. Lennin Taveras, a 36-year-old man, was at his girlfriend's apartment on University Avenue in the Morris Heights neighborhood on the evening of June 30th. What should have been a peaceful night turned into a scene of violence and heartbreak that would forever alter the lives of those involved.
The tranquility was shattered when his girlfriend's ex-husband, Angel Freites, took extreme measures to confront the new couple.
Freites, who was 29 at the time, had a history of threatening Taveras. Driven by jealousy, he had sent text messages warning Taveras of his murderous intentions. Despite the explicit nature of these threats, they were not taken seriously enough to prevent the tragedy that unfolded. On that fatal evening, Freites climbed the fire escape of the apartment building, gaining entry through a window. Once inside, he confronted Taveras and his ex-girlfriend. In a selfless act, Taveras urged his girlfriend to flee to safety. It was then that Freites discharged his weapon, shooting Taveras twice in the back and once in the head. The wounds were instantly fatal.
Following the horrific act, Freites forced his ex-girlfriend to accompany him to his own residence on Grand Avenue. This ordeal continued until she was able to contact the authorities by calling 911. A manhunt for Freites ensued, culminating in his surrender to the police on July 6, 2018. The legal process that followed brought some measure of closure to the grieving families.
Angel Freites was charged with the murder of Lennin Taveras. In a move that spared the families a lengthy and painful trial, Freites pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on November 14, 2019. The culmination of the legal proceedings occurred on December 13, 2019, when Bronx Supreme Court Justice Steven Hornstein sentenced him to 15 years to life in prison. The prosecution highlighted the premeditated nature of the crime, underscoring the emotional devastation inflicted upon Taveras's loved ones and the woman who witnessed his final moments. The case stands as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of domestic disputes and the profound loss experienced by a community.
