On a tragic day in Queens, New York, 47-year-old Linda Olthof's life was cut short in a devastating murder-suicide. The incident, which occurred on July 30, 2018, also claimed the lives of her 6-year-old son, James Shields Jr., and Saskia Shields, the current wife of Linda's ex-husband, James Shields Sr. The perpetrator was identified as James Shields Sr., who took his own life after killing the three individuals.
The events unfolded in an Astoria apartment against the backdrop of a
contentious and prolonged custody battle between Olthof and Shields Sr. over their young son. Olthof, a Dutch national, had been in New York with her son for a custodial visit. The dispute over their son's living arrangements, with Olthof wanting him to reside primarily in the Netherlands, had reportedly taken a significant emotional and financial toll on Shields Sr.
An acquaintance of Olthof grew concerned when they were unable to reach her and contacted the police. Upon their arrival at Shields Sr.'s apartment, law enforcement discovered a grim scene. Inside, they found the bodies of Linda Olthof, her son James, Saskia Shields, and James Shields Sr. The medical examiner later confirmed that Olthof, her son, and Saskia Shields all died from gunshot wounds, while James Shields Sr. died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Investigators found two handguns at the scene, and it was determined that James Shields Sr. was the sole perpetrator of the killings. Prior to the incident, Shields Sr. had expressed his distress over the custody battle through online posts, including a GoFundMe campaign where he detailed the financial and emotional strain he was under.
