In the summer of 2016, a quiet street in New Orleans East was shattered by violence that claimed the lives of a mother and her son. On the evening of July 26th, within the walls of their home on Edgefield Drive, 59-year-old Debra Burgess and her 44-year-old son, Freddy Burgess, were fatally shot. The tranquility of the neighborhood was abruptly broken by the sound of gunfire, prompting calls to the police.
When officers arrived at the residence, they discovered a tragic scene. Freddy Burgess was found deceased inside the home. His mother, Debra, had also been shot and was rushed to a local hospital in a desperate attempt to save her life, but she succumbed to her injuries. Miraculously, three children, all under the age of thirteen, who were also inside the house at the time of the shooting, were found physically unharmed.
According to initial police reports, it is believed that one or more unknown individuals entered the Burgess home and opened fire on the mother and son.
