Ostilio 'Ozzy' Salerno, a 44-year-old male construction foreman, died on July 5, 2019, following a fatal encounter in the Bronx, New York. The incident that led to his death unfolded in a Morris Heights apartment building located at 1750 Sedgwick Avenue. Salerno had gone to the apartment of his colleague and subordinate, Rafael Morato, where a workplace dispute between the two men tragically escalated.
During the argument, Morato produced a handgun and shot Salerno twice in the torso.
Despite his injuries, Salerno attempted to flee the apartment but collapsed at the doorway. When police arrived, Morato initially claimed that Salerno had shot himself. However, investigators quickly grew suspicious of his account. An analysis of the bullet impact marks on the apartment walls revealed that the shots had been fired from Morato's bedroom, directly contradicting his statement. This key piece of evidence, along with other findings from the investigation, led to Morato's arrest.
Rafael Morato was subsequently charged with the murder of Ostilio Salerno. Following a jury trial, he was found guilty of second-degree murder on March 6, 2023. The trial brought to light the violent nature of the crime and the deliberate actions taken by Morato. On July 31, 2023, Morato, then 49, was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for the murder. The sentencing offered a measure of justice to Salerno's grieving family and friends.
