In a brazen act of daylight violence, 21-year-old David Hutchinson was shot and killed on August 26, 2019, in the Laurelton neighborhood of Queens, New York. The fatal encounter unfolded near the intersection of 140th Avenue and Springfield Boulevard, where Hutchinson was sitting in a Dodge Charger. A white vehicle pulled alongside, and an occupant opened fire, striking him multiple times in the chest and buttocks.
Hutchinson was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Hutchinson's death revealed a narrative steeped in gang rivalry and retribution. Hutchinson was identified as a reputed member of the 'Snow Gang.' On the day of the shooting, he had allegedly been involved in the robbery of a gold 'YTB' chain from a high-ranking member of the rival 'Wood City' gang at a recording studio. In a bold move, the leader of the Snow Gang reportedly posted a photo on social media wearing the stolen chain, an act that was seen as a profound insult.
In what prosecutors described as a retaliatory act to uphold his gang's reputation, Christopher Acevedo, the founder and leader of the Wood City gang, orchestrated the drive-by shooting. Surveillance footage captured the white vehicle, a BMW sedan, pulling up next to Hutchinson's car, the shooter lowering the window, and firing approximately six shots before fleeing the scene. The attack occurred in broad daylight outside a bodega.
Following an investigation, Christopher Acevedo was arrested and faced federal charges for the murder. In May 2023, after a two-week trial, a federal jury convicted Acevedo of murder in aid of racketeering and causing death through the use of a firearm. The evidence presented at trial established the Wood City gang's involvement in various criminal activities, including drug trafficking and fraud, dating back to at least 2010. In November 2023, Acevedo was sentenced to two concurrent terms of life imprisonment for his role in the murder of David Hutchinson.
