In the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, a dispute between neighbors culminated in a tragic and violent event that claimed the life of 62-year-old Yvette Rivera on October 18, 2019. Residing in a brownstone on West 131st Street with her partner, Hampton Smith, who served as the building's superintendent, Rivera found her life cut short in a horrifying double murder-suicide.
The perpetrator was their neighbor, Bruce Anderson, with whom Rivera and Smith had a history of conflicts,
reportedly stemming from noise complaints. On that Friday afternoon, the long-simmering tensions escalated dramatically. Anderson, described by some who knew him as troubled, confronted the 78-year-old Smith in the hallway of their apartment building and fatally shot him.
Following the initial act of violence, Anderson proceeded to the second floor of the building where he encountered Yvette Rivera and shot her as well, ending her life. The rampage did not end there. Anderson then returned to his own apartment, barricaded himself inside, and set it on fire before taking his own life. The ensuing blaze required a significant response from the New York City Fire Department, with over 100 firefighters called to the scene to extinguish the flames. Two firefighters sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the operation.
Upon entering the building, emergency responders discovered the bodies of Rivera and Smith. Anderson was found deceased inside his fire-ravaged apartment. The investigation into the incident concluded that Anderson had acted alone, and the case was closed as a murder-suicide. The community was left to mourn the sudden and violent loss of Rivera and Smith, who were remembered by friends and neighbors as kind and helpful individuals.
