In the summer of 2020, a night out in Manhattan's Flatiron District ended in tragedy for 19-year-old Erica Lopez. On June 26th, Lopez, a recent high school graduate from Norwalk, Connecticut, was with her boyfriend, Andres Arias, celebrating a birthday at a rooftop bar. An altercation began when a woman from another group reportedly groped Lopez, leading to a confrontation.
Seeking to de-escalate the situation, Lopez and Arias decided to leave the establishment.
However, they were followed by members of the other party. As they walked near Madison Square Park in the early hours of the morning, a car approached, and a man emerged, opening fire on the couple. In a final act of love, Lopez pushed her boyfriend out of the path of the bullets, sustaining a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. Arias was also shot but survived his injuries. Erica Lopez was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.
The alleged shooter was quickly identified as 27-year-old Ruddy Osias of Queens. He was arrested the following day and charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a firearm. Osias was held without bail following his arraignment. The case drew significant media attention, highlighting the senseless violence that cut short a young life. Friends and family remembered Lopez as a kind and creative individual who loved to draw and had a passion for poetry and environmental causes.
