On a Sunday night in the Bronx, 19-year-old Stephon Brown was fatally shot, a victim of the street violence that plagued his neighborhood. The male teenager was with his 21-year-old brother, Rory Brown, near the Soundview Houses on Randall Avenue on November 17, 2019, when the shooting occurred at approximately 9:10 p.m. Stephon was struck in the back, and his brother was wounded in the arm. Both were rushed to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi, but Stephon could not be saved.
His brother, Rory, survived his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting pointed to gang-related violence. The suspect was identified as Dane Richardson, a 36-year-old man with a known history of violent crime. Authorities revealed that Richardson was also a suspect in another homicide that had occurred just a few months prior. In August of the same year, he was alleged to have shot and killed 26-year-old Nestor Ventura in the courtyard of a Commonwealth Avenue apartment building.
Dane Richardson was apprehended and faced a litany of charges for his violent spree. These included two counts of murder for the deaths of Stephon Brown and Nestor Ventura, attempted murder for the shooting of Rory Brown, as well as weapon and drug possession. The legal process culminated in a jury trial where Richardson was found guilty on multiple counts. In June 2023, a judge sentenced him to a term of 83 years to life in prison, ensuring that he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars for the senseless acts of violence that cut short two young lives and left another man wounded.
