On the evening of December 7, 2019, in the town of Newfield, New York, 29-year-old Dejour Xavier Gandy was fatally shot in a home on Shaffer Road. According to an occupant of the residence, the tragic event unfolded when three Black males, their faces obscured by coverings, forcibly entered the house. The intruders confronted Gandy, brandishing firearms, and one of the men opened fire, striking and killing him. Following the shooting, all three assailants fled the scene, leaving a community in shock and a family to mourn their loss.
The Tompkins County Sheriff's Office promptly launched a homicide investigation into Gandy's death. In the initial stages of their inquiry, authorities offered a $2,500 reward for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the individuals responsible for the violent home invasion and subsequent killing. The case was highlighted in the department's 2019-2020 annual report, which underscored the ongoing nature of the investigation. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the search for Gandy's killers has continued. As of late 2025, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests, charges, or convictions in the case, leaving the circumstances surrounding the death of Dejour Xavier Gandy an unresolved tragedy. The investigation remains open as authorities continue to seek answers and justice for the young man whose life was cut short.
