In the late morning of Saturday, December 7, 2019, a burst of gunfire shattered the daylight at the intersection of Second and Judson streets in Albany, New York. Ahmad Fleming, a 33-year-old male, was struck in the torso by a bullet. Despite the grievous wound, he managed to make his way to Albany Medical Center Hospital. However, a few hours after the shooting, Fleming succumbed to his injuries.
The incident marked the fourth fatal shooting to plague that specific city intersection within a span of just 14 months.
A longtime resident of Albany, Ahmad Fleming was known affectionately as 'MAN'. In his youth, he had been a standout high school basketball player and had a passion for the arts, participating in the Capital Rep Theatre. He was remembered as a creative artist and lyricist. Fleming's past also included involvement with the 'Jungle Junkies' gang, which led to a decade-long sentence in federal prison on a racketeering conviction. He had been released from prison in March 2018, less than two years before his death.
The Albany police investigation into Fleming's murder led them to a suspect weeks later. Quintin Lacy, a 30-year-old Albany resident, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. A key piece of evidence in the case against Lacy was surveillance video that prosecutors said showed him as part of a group of men who approached Fleming just before 11 a.m. and then showed Lacy firing a gun at him.
Quintin Lacy was arraigned in Albany City Criminal Court and sent to the Albany County jail. His case proceeded to trial, where an Albany County jury found him guilty of murder and the associated weapon charge. In December 2022, following his conviction, Lacy faced a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison for the killing of Ahmad Fleming. His sentencing was scheduled for January 20, 2023.
