On the evening of June 5, 2020, in a crowded deli in East New York, Brooklyn, the life of 28-year-old Evon Hillman was tragically cut short. At approximately 8:20 p.m., a man named Marcus Worrell entered the establishment located at 620 Livonia Avenue and opened fire, shooting Hillman multiple times. According to testimony, Hillman died instantly, but the gunman continued to fire even after he had fallen to the ground.
The senseless act of violence also resulted in serious injuries to a
40-year-old man who was standing next to Hillman. He was shot in the stomach and suffered significant internal damage. Following the shooting, the assailant fled the scene, robbing another individual of their motorcycle at gunpoint to make his escape. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that Hillman was an expectant father; his fiancée gave birth to their son just two months after his murder.
The New York City Police Department apprehended the suspect, 28-year-old Marcus Worrell of East New York, on August 5, 2020, two months after the fatal shooting. Worrell faced a jury trial and was convicted on November 9, 2023, on charges of second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. On January 8, 2024, a Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice sentenced Worrell to 25 years to life in prison. In a statement, the Brooklyn District Attorney remarked on the defendant's 'complete indifference to human life' for callously opening fire in a crowded deli.
