In the summer of 2020, a 33-year-old woman from Brooklyn, Shatavia Walls, became the target of a deadly plot. Her story is one that weaves together a dispute over fireworks and a calculated retaliation for her testimony against a gang member in federal court. On the evening of July 7, 2020, while walking through a courtyard at the Pink Houses in East New York, Walls was ambushed and shot multiple times.
She succumbed to her injuries ten days later, on July 17, 2020.
The events leading to her death began to unfold on the Fourth of July, just days before the shooting. Walls had a confrontation with members of the Ninedee Gang who were setting off fireworks in the housing complex. During this argument, a gang member, Maliek Miller, allegedly called her a 'snitch' and fired a gunshot into the air. This public branding was a direct reference to Walls' testimony a year prior, in 2019, against a member of an affiliated gang. Following that testimony, flyers labeling her a 'rat' had been posted around her neighborhood. The altercation over the fireworks appeared to be the final catalyst for a plan to murder her.
In the days that followed the fireworks incident, members of the Ninedee Gang allegedly conspired to kill Walls. On the evening of the attack, two individuals, one of whom was identified as Quintin Green, lay in wait for her. As she walked through the courtyard, they opened fire. Another man, who was with Walls, was also shot but survived. The investigation into her murder led to the arrests of several members of the Ninedee Gang.
Federal prosecutors brought charges against Quintin Green, Chayanne Fernandez, and Maliek Miller for their roles in the murder. A fourth man, Kevin Wint, was charged as an accessory after the fact for allegedly helping the others hide from the police. Court documents revealed that ballistic evidence from the scene of Walls' murder matched the gun Miller had fired during the July 4th confrontation. In March 2025, Quintin Green, also known as 'Wild Child,' was sentenced to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to causing Walls' death through the use of a firearm.
