On a summer evening in 2020, 16-year-old Kleimer Mendez was playing basketball at the George Walker Jr. Park in the Cypress Hills neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. It was July 26th when the lively scene at the park was shattered by sudden violence. A dark-colored SUV approached the basketball court, and a gunman stood up through the sunroof and opened fire on the crowd. Mendez and another teenager, 18-year-old Antonio Villa, were both struck in the head by the gunfire and fatally wounded.
A third teen, who was 17 years old, was shot in the leg but survived the attack.
The brazen drive-by shooting sent shockwaves through the community and was part of a significant uptick in gun violence that New York City was experiencing at the time. In the wake of the deadly incident, a memorial was set up for the two young victims. However, the violence was not over; the following day, another shooting occurred at the vigil, injuring one person. The back-to-back shootings underscored a period of heightened tension and violence in the neighborhood.
The New York Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the murders of Kleimer Mendez and Antonio Villa. Their efforts led to the arrests of two individuals in connection with the deadly shooting. One of the suspects was a 15-year-old male whose name was not released due to his age. He was taken into custody and faced serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, weapons possession, and reckless endangerment. The second suspect arrested was 23-year-old Joshua Bonilla, also from Brooklyn. He faced the same charges as his younger alleged accomplice.
