On a quiet Labor Day morning in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, the life of 62-year-old Michael Scully, a man affectionately known as the 'unofficial mayor' of his block, was brought to a tragic and violent end. On September 7, 2020, at approximately 6:50 a.m., Scully was walking his dog near his home on 74th Street and Seventh Avenue when he was fatally shot.
The beloved community member, described by friends as a caring and God-fearing man, was discovered unconscious on his front steps with gunshot wounds to his head and shoulder. Paramedics rushed him to NYU Langone Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly focused on a neighbor with whom Scully had a history of conflict. Police identified 52-year-old George Vayos as the suspect, alleging that a long-standing rivalry between the two men had culminated in the deadly encounter. Friends and neighbors recounted that Scully, who was known for his community spirit, had ongoing friction with Vayos, who reportedly considered himself a self-appointed safety patroller of the neighborhood. It is believed that an argument erupted between the two men that morning, leading Vayos to shoot Scully multiple times.
The day after the fatal shooting, on September 8, 2020, George Vayos was arrested by the 68th Precinct. He was subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a firearm. Surveillance footage from the area reportedly captured the incident and showed the suspect returning to his home after the shooting. A search of Vayos's residence uncovered a firearm and clothing that matched what he was wearing at the time of the incident. Records from July 2022 indicated that Vayos remained in custody at the George R. Vierno Center in The Bronx as legal proceedings in his case continued.
