On a crisp autumn morning in Harlem, 31-year-old Jamel Smith was on his way to grab breakfast, a routine start to his day that would tragically be his last. It was November 4, 2020, when his life was violently cut short in a hail of bullets near the intersection of West 112th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard. Smith had paused to speak with a woman across from a supermarket when a gunman approached and shot him multiple times in the head and neck.
The attack was so brutal that first responders described him as being nearly decapitated. Medics rushed him to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he succumbed to them before his family had a chance to say goodbye.
The brazen daylight shooting sent shockwaves through the community where Smith was a well-known and beloved figure. Despite his imposing stature, his sister, Egypt Smith, remembered him as a kind and protective man. The New York Police Department immediately launched an intensive investigation to bring his killer to justice. The investigation led authorities to identify 44-year-old Andrew Paige of Charlottesville, Virginia, as the prime suspect.
