Jahade Joele Chancey, a 23-year-old male, was fatally shot on January 16, 2021, in the Grymes Hill section of Staten Island, New York. The incident occurred at Demonlow Studios, a recording studio located on Van Duzer Street. Chancey was a valued member of the local music community.
On the evening of his death, three individuals, identified as Charles Brooks, Darren Boyd, and Ming Liu, allegedly attempted to burglarize the recording studio.
Brooks was reportedly armed with an assault rifle, and Boyd was armed with a handgun. After ringing the doorbell, Brooks attempted to force the studio door open with the barrel of his rifle. Individuals inside the studio blocked the door, preventing their entry.
As the suspects began to flee, Boyd allegedly fired into the studio, and then fired two more rounds through a window. Jahade Chancey was struck in the back by one of these rounds and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Following an investigation by the NYPD, Charles Brooks, 29, Darren Boyd, 30, and Ming Liu, 29, all from Newark, New Jersey, were arrested. All three men were indicted and arraigned on charges including second-degree murder, attempted burglary, and conspiracy. Brooks was arrested in May 2021, while Boyd and Liu were arrested in June of the same year. The Richmond County District Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case.
