In the early morning hours of March 7, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet outside a catering hall in the Cypress Hills neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. When the violence subsided, 28-year-old Stephanie Munoz lay wounded, having been shot in the abdomen. She was rushed to Jamaica Hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Another individual, a 26-year-old man, was also shot and wounded in the torso but survived.
The shooting occurred just after 6 a.m.
outside the Celebration Events and Party Hall on Atlantic Avenue. Investigators began to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. Their efforts quickly led them to a suspect.
A day after the shooting, detectives arrested 26-year-old Jose Ortiz of Ridgewood, Queens. He was taken into custody at the 75th Precinct and charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment. While a definitive motive was not immediately established, law enforcement sources indicated that the shooting was believed to be gang-related. Authorities suggested that further charges against Ortiz could be forthcoming as the investigation continued.
