On a Saturday morning in Canarsie, Brooklyn, 17-year-old Bryan Sanon was out for a walk with his friends near Farragut Road and East 82nd Street. It was March 13, 2021, and the day took a tragic turn when a grey sedan appeared and a gunman emerged, opening fire on the group of teenagers. Sanon was fatally wounded in the attack. One of his friends, an 18-year-old, was shot in the leg, and another, aged 19, was struck in the face.
Bryan was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting was later determined to be a calculated act of gang violence. Investigators found that members of the Choo gang were driving through rival Woo gang territory that morning, actively 'hunting' for rivals. When they spotted Bryan Sanon and his friends, they circled the block twice before stopping their rented Toyota Camry at the intersection of East 82nd Street and Farragut Road to set up an ambush.
Following an extensive investigation, two suspects were identified and apprehended. Naquan Pruitt, who was driving the vehicle, was arrested in Pennsylvania on May 25, 2021. The second suspect, Culture Bermudez, a rapper also known as CoachDaGhost, was arrested in Georgia on July 6, 2021. Both men were extradited to New York to face charges.
In May of 2025, both Pruitt and Bermudez were convicted of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder following a two-jury trial. Culture Bermudez was sentenced to a term of 60 years to life in prison. Naquan Pruitt received a sentence of 25 years to life in prison for his role in the fatal shooting of Bryan Sanon and the wounding of his two friends.
