Lamon Lanier, a 34-year-old male, was fatally shot in Albany, New York, in a tragic incident that unfolded in the early morning hours. The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. on July 23, 2021, near the intersection of Willett Street and Hudson Avenue, an area adjacent to Washington Park. Lanier sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital in critical condition.
Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead the following day, early on Saturday, July 24, 2021.
The investigation into the shooting led to the identification of a suspect. In October 2021, Shimair Perrin, then 29 years old, was indicted by an Albany County Grand Jury in connection with Lanier's death. Perrin was charged with second-degree murder and felony criminal possession of a weapon. Prosecutors alleged that Perrin intentionally shot and killed Lanier following a dispute that had originated at a bar on Lark Street. He initially pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In a later development, Shimair Perrin, then 30, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. On June 27, 2022, he admitted to one count of first-degree manslaughter. This plea satisfied the original indictment for murder and weapon possession. In September 2022, a judge sentenced Perrin to 20 years in state prison for the killing of Lamon Lanier. His sentence also includes five years of post-release supervision.
