In the winter of 2018, the city of Albany was shaken by its first homicide of the year. On the afternoon of January 4th, 35-year-old Anthony L. Malloy, a male resident of the city, was fatally shot at the intersection of First and Quail streets. Malloy was crossing the street when a shooter opened fire, striking him multiple times, including a fatal wound to the torso.
In the immediate aftermath, a family member attempted to rush him to the hospital, stopping to flag down a passing ambulance on Henry Johnson Boulevard. Despite the efforts of first responders, Malloy was later pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
The investigation into Malloy's death, who was a father of three, quickly determined that he was the intended target of the attack. Known affectionately as 'BAM' or 'UPT,' he was remembered by family and friends as someone who enjoyed spending time with his children, family gatherings, and was making positive changes in his life. In August of that year, a significant breakthrough was made in the case with the indictment of Shakir Redmon, a 27-year-old state prison inmate also known by the aliases 'Face' and 'Ghost.'
Redmon was charged with second-degree murder, conspiracy, weapon possession, and drug possession in connection with Malloy's killing. The indictment alleged that Redmon and others had conspired to murder Malloy and that Redmon had obtained a vehicle to carry out the attack. In March 2019, Shakir Redmon pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of conspiracy for his role in the homicide. He was subsequently sentenced to a term of 7 ½ to 15 years in state prison for his involvement in the death of Anthony Malloy. While Redmon was convicted for his part in the conspiracy, no one else has been charged in connection with the shooting itself.
