On the evening of September 3, 2021, a gathering of mourners outside a Bronx funeral home was shattered by gunfire, leaving one man dead and another wounded. The deceased was identified as 37-year-old Leshaun Whitefield. The incident occurred at approximately 7:08 p.m. outside the Parkchester Funeral Home on Unionport Road, where a service was being held for another homicide victim.
A vehicle, described as a gray Chevrolet Equinox or a Jeep Cherokee, pulled up to the location, and an
occupant began firing into the crowd of funeral attendees. Whitefield was struck in the chest, and a 27-year-old man was shot in the right leg. Some of the people at the funeral reportedly returned fire at the fleeing vehicle. Emergency services rushed both victims to Jacobi Hospital, where Leshaun Whitefield was pronounced dead a short time later. The second victim was reported to be in stable condition.
In the wake of the shooting, the New York Police Department began an investigation, exploring a possible connection to gang activity. On Monday, September 20, 2021, an arrest was made in the case. Juan Nunez, a 25-year-old resident of the Bronx, was taken into custody by officers from the 43rd Precinct. He was subsequently charged with reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon. The investigation into the shooting remained ongoing following the arrest.
