In the East New York section of Brooklyn, a burst of gunfire on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 28, 2021, tragically cut short the life of 16-year-old Cahlil Pennington. The male teenager was outside the Fiorentino Plaza Houses just after 1:30 p.m. when the fatal shooting occurred. Responding officers discovered Pennington unconscious and unresponsive, suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso.
He was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead.
The circumstances surrounding Pennington’s death suggest a chaotic and violent scene. According to some reports, security footage captured the harrowing moments as Pennington and two other teenagers were running down Pitkin Avenue. It is believed that one of the youths with Pennington turned and fired at a gunman who was pursuing them. Tragically, the bullet missed its intended target and struck Pennington in the head. A student at Brooklyn's New Visions AIM Charter High School II, Pennington's death was one of several teen fatalities due to gun violence in New York City that week.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police began an investigation into the incident. As of late September 2021, the suspects involved in the shooting that led to Cahlil Pennington's death were still at large, and the investigation was reported to be ongoing. There have been no subsequent public reports detailing any arrests, charges, or legal proceedings in connection with his death.
