In the fading afternoon light of a late September day, tragedy befell a Brooklyn neighborhood, forever altering the lives of a local family. On September 30, 2021, at approximately 4:55 p.m., 19-year-old Myles Jabateh was shot in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. The brazen attack occurred in front of an apartment building located at 1593 Prospect Place.
Responding to reports of the shooting, officers from the 77th Precinct discovered the young man with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and buttocks. Emergency medical services rushed him to Interfaith Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Myles Jabateh, a male who lived on the same block where the shooting occurred, succumbed to his injuries and passed away the following day, on October 1, 2021.
The perpetrator of this violent act was captured on security camera footage, which the New York City Police Department later released to the public in an appeal for information. The footage showed the suspect, described as a Black male, walking out of a nearby bodega. His face was obscured by a light-colored surgical mask and a black hooded jacket. He was also wearing light-colored jeans and black sneakers with distinctive blue shoelaces. The video revealed the chillingly casual nature of the attack; the gunman was seen carrying a black plastic bag from which he pulled a handgun. He then pointed the weapon across the street and fired several shots before calmly walking away from the scene.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the police launched an investigation, but no arrests were made. Law enforcement officials urged anyone with information regarding the suspect's whereabouts to come forward and contact the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline. As of the initial reports in early October 2021, the suspect remained at large, and the investigation was ongoing. There have been no subsequent public reports of any arrests, charges, trials, or convictions in connection with the death of Myles Jabateh. The case, as far as publicly available information indicates, remains unresolved.
