Matthew Rivera, an 18-year-old Hispanic/Latino male, was killed on the evening of December 2, 2021, after a confrontation that began inside a neighborhood deli in East Harlem and spilled out into the cold air on East 119th Street. Not long before 8 p.m., police were called to the block near Third Avenue, where Rivera had been shot in the torso. When officers arrived, they found him gravely wounded on the street, the fight already over, the gunfire already faded into the city’s usual noise.
