In the heart of Brooklyn, a life was violently cut short on the cold evening of February 10, 2022. Andre Lewis, a 40-year-old man, was standing outside a convenience store on Willmohr Street in the Brownsville neighborhood when a hail of over 30 bullets erupted, ending his life and injuring another 40-year-old man who was with him. The sheer intensity of the gunfire underscored the brutal nature of the attack that shattered the night's quiet.
Friends and neighbors remembered Lewis as a
man who brought laughter to those around him and was a well-liked figure in his community. In the wake of the shooting, a small memorial of blue candles was set up on the sidewalk where he fell, a somber tribute to a life lost to gun violence. Efforts were made by the community to clean the blood-stained pavement, a physical and symbolic attempt to erase the tragedy that had unfolded.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the New York Police Department identified a suspect, 24-year-old Ramone Donaldson, who resided in an apartment building near the scene of the crime. Donaldson was subsequently arrested and faced charges of murder and attempted murder. During his arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court, Donaldson claimed that he had acted in self-defense, alleging that Lewis had flashed a gun at him, prompting him to open fire.
Prosecutors, however, argued for him to be held without bail, citing the brazenness of the shooting. The judge ultimately set bail at $150,000 cash or a $250,000 bond.
