Nikki Huang was a 22-year-old Asian woman who worked at her family’s Chinese restaurant and owned a nail salon on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. She was friends with Jesse Parrilla, also 22, a former college basketball player with no criminal record who was known as a good-hearted person. The two had known each other since middle school.
A violent chain of events began on May 15, 2022, after Huang’s purse was stolen by alleged members of a local crew called the “Down the Hill”
gang. Instead of contacting the police, Huang reportedly told friends affiliated with the rival “Up the Hill” gang. This complaint ignited a fierce, tit-for-tat gang war that escalated over the next several hours. In the early hours of May 16, after Parrilla had given Huang a ride home, he was allegedly ambushed and kidnapped. Huang was then lured from her apartment and taken as well. Prosecutors would later say the pair endured "three hours of hell" as they were held captive and driven around the city.
At around 4:15 a.m. on May 16, firefighters were called to a burning Honda Accord on Shore Road, near the Pelham Bay and Split Rock Golf Courses in the Bronx. After extinguishing the flames, they made a gruesome discovery. Inside the charred vehicle, which belonged to Parrilla’s mother, were the bodies of Huang and Parrilla. They had been burned beyond recognition. An autopsy later revealed that both had been shot execution-style before the car was set on fire. Parrilla was shot in the head and chest, and Huang was shot in the head and neck.
The investigation into the double homicide unfolded over the next two years, leading to the arrests of several suspects. In March 2023, after a 10-month manhunt, police apprehended Jahmel Sanders. A year later, in March 2024, authorities arrested three more men in connection with the killings: Rahul Cuya, Terrence White, and Richard Santiago.
All four men were indicted on a wide range of serious charges, including murder, manslaughter, kidnapping, arson, robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon. In October 2026, the joint trial for Cuya, Santiago, White, and Sanders began in Bronx Supreme Court. A fifth suspect, Stephen Santiago, who is the brother of defendant Richard Santiago, remains at large and is wanted by police as of October 2026.
