On a late Saturday night in May 2022, Donovan Davy, a 45-year-old Black man, was walking to his mother's home in the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, engaged in a phone conversation with his sister. A dedicated Transportation Security Administration officer for nearly two decades at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Davy was just blocks from his destination when he was tragically ambushed.
The conversation with his sister was abruptly cut short, and she heard his name being called out in distress over the phone before the line went silent. Rushing to the scene, she found her brother on the ground, suffering from gunshot wounds to his neck and leg. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on May 29, 2022.
The investigation into the seemingly unprovoked attack revealed a chilling narrative. Surveillance footage showed a vehicle, later identified as a Nissan Maxima registered to Irene Brown, dropping off a man who approached Donovan Davy from behind and opened fire. The same vehicle was then seen picking up the shooter and fleeing the scene. The motive for the killing remains unclear, though authorities have indicated it was a targeted attack. Donovan Davy, remembered by his family as a kindhearted and intelligent man who spoke several languages, had no criminal record.
Months after the shooting, on September 1, 2022, authorities apprehended two suspects. Richard Barrett, 34, was identified as the alleged gunman, and Irene Brown, 31, was accused of being the getaway driver. Investigators used surveillance video and cellphone data to connect both individuals to the crime. Brown had reportedly changed the license plate on her Nissan Maxima a week after the murder. Both Barrett and Brown, who were described as acquaintances of the victim, were charged with second-degree murder. Barrett faced an additional charge of criminal possession of a weapon. They were held without bail and awaited trial, each facing a potential sentence of 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
