In the summer of 2022, a violent encounter in the Bronx claimed the life of 41-year-old Craig Thomas of West Hempstead, New York. On the afternoon of Saturday, August 27, police responded to a 911 call at the intersection of East 214th Street and Wilson Avenue in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx. Upon arrival, they discovered Thomas inside a car, unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso.
Emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved fatal.
Another man, aged 34, was also a victim in the shooting, sustaining a gunshot wound to his arm. He privately sought medical attention at a different hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. The initial investigation into the shooting was extensive, with the New York Police Department appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest in the case.
About a month after the fatal shooting, the NYPD announced a significant development in the investigation with the arrest of two suspects. Michael Spand, a 24-year-old resident of Harlem, was taken into custody and faced serious charges, including murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. A second individual, 42-year-old Johnson Gayle from the Wakefield area of the Bronx, was also arrested in connection with the incident. Gayle was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment for his alleged role in the events that transpired that August afternoon.
