On Wednesday, September 14, 2022, Christopher Michael Pesavento, a 50-year-old male, died following a prolonged standoff with law enforcement at his home in Croton-on-Hudson, New York. The incident began around 12:20 p.m. when New York State Police responded to a report of a barricaded person with a gun at a residence on Quaker Bridge Road.
For nearly twelve hours, crisis negotiators from both the State Police and the Westchester County Police Department attempted to persuade Pesavento
to surrender peacefully. A secure perimeter was established around the house as authorities worked to resolve the situation. During the standoff, Pesavento fired approximately 40 rounds from inside his home, striking and injuring two Westchester County police officers. Both officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at a local hospital before being released. Law enforcement officials on the scene did not return fire. Instead, they utilized less-lethal methods and a police robot equipped with a camera in an effort to secure his surrender.
Shortly after midnight on September 15, it was determined that Pesavento was deceased inside the residence. The cause of his death was to be determined by the Westchester Medical Examiner's Office. The New York State Attorney General's Office also responded to the scene, and an investigation into the incident remained ongoing. No arrests were made in connection with his death.
Christopher Pesavento was a lifelong resident of Croton-on-Hudson and a veteran firefighter. He had recently retired as a lieutenant after a 25-year career with the Greenville Fire Department in Greenburgh and was also a 30-year member of the Croton Fire Department. He was noted for his service at Ground Zero following the September 11th attacks. He was a husband and a father of three children.
