In a tragic and unforeseen act of violence, 32-year-old Frazer Cameron, a male teacher, was fatally shot on May 4, 1956, at Maryland Park Junior High School in Capitol Heights, Maryland. The events of that day were set in motion when a 15-year-old student, Billy Prevatte, was reprimanded by the school's principal for a missed assignment.
Angered by the disciplinary action, Prevatte left the school and returned with a rifle he had retrieved from his home.
His intended target was the principal, John Hrezo. However, in a devastating turn of events, Prevatte instead shot and killed Frazer Cameron. The rampage did not end there, as Prevatte also critically wounded the school's baseball coach, Dan Wagner, and shot another teacher, Robert Hicks, in the hand.
Following the shooting, Billy Prevatte attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by workmen in the vicinity. He was subsequently taken into custody and faced charges of murder and assault with intent to kill. The violent incident sent shockwaves through the community, leaving them to mourn the senseless loss of a dedicated teacher.
