On a winter morning in 2007, the life of 25-year-old Joseph Lavelle Thompson was cut short in a fatal shooting in Landover, Maryland. The male victim was killed on Wednesday, January 17, 2007, in what police described as a violent culmination of a love triangle.
The incident unfolded in the Kentland area, where Thompson had gone to a home on Vermont Avenue. Inside was Lauren A.
Proctor, a woman with whom both Thompson and another man, Nathan Everett Matthews, had been romantically involved and had fathered children. After Thompson began banging on the door, Proctor placed a call to 911.
Before law enforcement could arrive, however, 25-year-old Nathan Everett Matthews reached the residence. A struggle ensued between the two men near the front door, which ended when Matthews shot Thompson multiple times.
Following the shooting, Matthews was taken into custody by Prince George's County police. He provided a statement to homicide detectives in which he admitted his involvement in the shooting. He also disclosed the location of the. 22-caliber handgun used in the incident. Matthews was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder. The outcome of the charges against him is not publicly available.
