In the early hours of a Saturday morning in June 2017, the vibrant life of 21-year-old Zachary Nelson was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire on Tulane Avenue in New Orleans. A graduate of St. Augustine High School, where he was remembered as a polite and hardworking honor student, Zachary had dreams of one day becoming a neurosurgeon. Friends and family described him as a young man with a strong Christian faith who was a leader among his peers and a dedicated football player.
On
the night of his death, Zachary and a friend made a brief stop at a birthday party being held at an event hall. They had only been at the gathering for about ten minutes when a dispute erupted between two other men, quickly escalating to gunfire. As chaos ensued and attendees scrambled for cover, Zachary was caught in the crossfire. He, along with two other men, 24-year-old Aaron Melton and 25-year-old Larry King, were fatally wounded in the shooting.
The news of Zachary’s senseless death sent shockwaves through his community. His loved ones were left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a young man on the cusp of a promising future. In the years that have followed, his family has worked to keep his memory alive through a memorial scholarship fund established in his name.
