In the quiet college town of College Park, Maryland, the life of a promising University of Maryland senior was tragically cut short. Dustin DeSha-Overcash, a 22-year-old male student double majoring in physics and astronomy, was found shot in his off-campus residence on 38th Avenue on January 11, 2011. The initial discovery of marijuana, a digital scale, and packaging materials at the scene led investigators to believe the motive was a drug-related robbery gone wrong.
The investigation
into the homicide of DeSha-Overcash led Prince George's County Police to two suspects: 23-year-old Deandre Ricardo Williams of Washington, D.C., and 22-year-old Stephan Weaver of Bowie. Weaver was apprehended on March 26, and Williams was arrested in D.C. days later. According to police, both men confessed to their roles in the crime. The motive was confirmed to be a robbery for both money and drugs. Weaver admitted to driving Williams to DeSha-Overcash's home, where Williams then entered with the intent to rob him. During the attempted robbery, DeSha-Overcash reportedly threw a glass jar at Williams, who then shot him twice in the abdomen.
Following their arrests, both men faced the judicial system for their involvement in the death of Dustin DeSha-Overcash. Stephan Weaver, who cooperated with authorities and showed remorse, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and the illegal use of a handgun. Deandre Ricardo Williams, the man who pulled the trigger, was sentenced to 49 years in prison for first-degree murder. He also received a concurrent 20-year sentence for the use of a handgun in a violent crime. Williams later appealed his conviction, claiming his Miranda rights had been violated, but the outcome of that appeal is not detailed.
