Stephen Alex Rane, a 22-year-old male student at the University of Maryland, was killed on February 12, 2013, in his off-campus home in College Park, Maryland. Remembered by friends and family as genuine and sincere, he was known for his sarcasm and frequent laughter. At the time of his death, Rane was a senior majoring in English and Linguistics and was a graduate of Centennial High School in Ellicott City, Maryland.
The circumstances of his death were part of a violent sequence of
events that unfolded in the early morning hours. His roommate, Dayvon Maurice Green, a 23-year-old graduate student, was identified as the assailant. According to police reports, Green set small fires in and around their shared home, which woke up his roommates. As Rane and another roommate went to get water to extinguish the flames, Green brandished a handgun.
Green shot both of his roommates, injuring one and fatally wounding Rane, who collapsed outside the residence. After shooting his roommates, Dayvon Maurice Green turned the gun on himself, ending his own life in the backyard of the home. Police later discovered a bag belonging to Green that contained additional weapons, including a machete, a baseball bat, and a loaded semi-automatic rifle. It was reported that Green had been suffering from a mental illness for at least a year prior to the incident. The case was determined to be a murder-suicide, and therefore no arrests were made in connection with Rane's death.
