In the late evening hours of Thursday, August 31, 2017, emergency responders were called to the 2000 block of Plank Road in Baton Rouge. There, they found 64-year-old Jesse Chase lying in the road with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries the following day. The incident was one of two shootings that occurred in Baton Rouge within an hour of each other, prompting an investigation by local police.
Months later,
in January 2018, an arrest was made in connection with the fatal shooting. The suspect was identified as 24-year-old Kasey Gray. At the time the murder charge was brought against him, Gray was already incarcerated for a separate crime. He had been arrested shortly before Christmas in 2017 for the attempted murder of his aunt. Authorities stated that Gray had entered the home he shared with his aunt on Madison Avenue and shot her in the side of the head.
Following the investigation into the death of Jesse Chase, Kasey Gray was re-booked on a charge of second-degree murder. He was accused of being the individual who shot and killed Chase on that August night. The motive for the shooting was not immediately made public.
