In a quiet neighborhood in Halfway, a community near Hagerstown, Maryland, a horrific scene unfolded on the afternoon of June 5, 2014. Inside a home on Dawn Drive, authorities discovered the bodies of three individuals in what was determined to be a murder-suicide. One of the victims was 23-year-old Christopher Wachter. Also found were his mother, 47-year-old Kimberly Smith, and his stepfather, 54-year-old William Smith Jr.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office was called to the
residence around 4:20 p.m. and upon arrival, they found a tragic and violent scene. The investigation quickly revealed that William Smith Jr. was the perpetrator. It is believed that he killed his wife and stepson before turning the weapon on himself. The investigation showed that both Christopher Wachter and his mother had suffered from multiple stab wounds in addition to gunshot wounds, indicating a brutal and violent struggle. William Smith Jr. died from a self-inflicted shotgun wound.
The motive for the double murder and suicide was not immediately clear, leaving a peaceful and family-friendly community in shock and disbelief.
